DuckDB 2.0.0 is a long-term support release of the open-source analytical SQL database, released October 21, 2026 by the DuckDB team (supported until at least October 2027). It adds triggers, a first-class VARIANT type, a client-server protocol called Quack, asynchronous I/O for Parquet and CSV, a new parser and an "agent mode" for the command-line tool. It's MIT-licensed, and you install it like any earlier DuckDB.

How we tested. October 21, 2026, on an 8-core Linux box. We downloaded the 2.0.0 and 1.5.6 command-line builds from GitHub and checked both SHA-256 checksums against the release page. Each version built the same 20-million-row table, then ran the same 8 analytic queries. In one session, 2.0.0 took 1.11 s in total against 1.93 s for 1.5.6, 1.7× faster, and was quicker on 7 of 8 queries. Agent mode printed the same rows in 30% fewer bytes. The full test is in the story.

Pro: Faster on our queries with the same answers, and agent mode fixes a real problem for AI coding agents. They get whole results, not 40 rows, plus a row count, a result hash and errors as JSON.

Con: Files written by 2.0 can't be opened by DuckDB 1.x. Integer division by zero (//, %) now raises an error where 1.5 returned NULL, and old x -> x + 1 lambdas fail. The CLI also starts in 36 ms, against 15 ms for 1.5.6.
