Vercel Shop is out: a Shopify storefront that agents can read and shop

SummaryVercel's open source Next.js template for Shopify is now generally available. Product pages come in a machine-readable form for AI agents, and agents can search the catalog and build carts over MCP. The optional shopping assistant has no cost cap, so set limits before you switch it on.

Vercel Shop is Vercel's open source Next.js storefront template for Shopify, and Vercel says it is now generally available. Shopify keeps the catalog, cart, checkout and payments. The template gives you the store in front of them: product, collection and search pages, a server-backed cart, and a handoff to Shopify checkout. It is built on Shopify's rebuilt Hydrogen SDK, which now works outside Shopify's own React Router framework and is also generally available, according to Vercel's announcement.

What's new for agents. The same product URL can serve a normal page to a person or a machine-readable version (price, availability, options) to an AI agent, so the agent doesn't have to parse the layout. The template ships structured data, a sitemap and an /llms.txt file for answer engines. It also exposes Shopify's Universal Commerce Protocol on the merchant's own domain, so agents can search products and build a cart over MCP (Model Context Protocol, a standard way for AI agents to call tools) without clicking through the site. Vercel's own merch store, vercel.store, runs on it.

What else is in the box. Next.js 16 with the App Router, React 19 and Tailwind CSS 4; caches that refresh when you edit products in Shopify Admin; optional customer accounts; and skills files that guide coding agents through setup and changes. You start with pnpm create next-app@latest my-store --example https://github.com/vercel/shop, add three Shopify values (store domain, Storefront API token, shop ID) and run it. The code is MIT licensed.

Who it's for: teams already selling on Shopify who want a custom headless storefront and want AI shopping agents to be able to read and use their store.

The caveat, from Vercel's own docs. The optional Shop Agent, a chat assistant that finds products and edits the cart, is off by default, and for good reason. Once you turn it on, chat is public and each message can incur model charges, and the docs say conversations have no cost cap. Bot protection is also off by default, and anyone with a conversation's ID may be able to read or control it. Before going live, add rate limits, AI Gateway spending controls and bot protection, and don't use the chat for private account data. The assistant can't place orders or take payment; shoppers still check out themselves.

You also need a Shopify store, and the template is built to deploy on Vercel.

MODEL has not built a store with Vercel Shop. Everything above comes from Vercel's announcement, the GitHub README and the Vercel Shop docs, read on October 19. Our site is hosted on Vercel; this is not sponsored and has no affiliate links.

    Hot take

A login screen is not a lock

A South African coffee chain's internal dashboard, reported as vibe-coded, showed a login page while shipping franchise contacts and business data to anyone with the URL. The fix is not to stop using AI. It is one check that takes five minutes.

Google Research lets the agent fix its own harness

Harness², now open source under Apache 2.0, has an agent rewrite the prompts, tools, skills and memory around a frozen model for each new task. The gains are real on Google's chosen benchmarks. So is the extra compute.

    The test

    Headroom, on the stand

The open-source context compressor for coding agents cut our test log by 83% and a JSON response by 66%, and kept the error we planted. It left our code file alone, and one of its own labels miscounted.
