OpenAI shipped Images 2.6 today (Nov 4, 2026) in ChatGPT, Codex, and the API. The pitch is faster stills, more control over edit rounds, and — new — GIFs for motion: brand mascots, product loops, reaction clips, and sketch-to-animated characters. @OpenAI opened with the launch thread; the blog (opens in a new tab) and follow-ups say it is available now, not "coming later."

What shipped. In ChatGPT and Codex you can generate GIFs from a prompt or an image, adjust speed, and edit frames. OpenAI also highlights saved reference images (yourself, pets, characters) you can reuse without re-uploading. On the API side, the models are GPT-Image-2.6 Flare and GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst. Flare is the speed path; OpenAI says Flare with quality=low can finish in as little as six seconds. Sunburst is the higher-quality / consistency path at medium or high quality across edits. API extras called out in the post: image markup (annotation), SVG exports, and a complexity parameter (low / medium / high) that steers how much planning the model does. OpenAI says Images 2.6 generates images 50% faster than before, and that people create 4 billion images per week across ChatGPT, Codex, and the API (about half a billion a day). Those speed and volume figures are OpenAI's claims.

Who it's for. ChatGPT and Codex creators who want looping social clips or brand-consistent stills without leaving the product; API builders who need markup, SVG, and a complexity dial for edit workflows. Availability: OpenAI says globally today in ChatGPT and Codex across all subscription tiers on desktop, mobile, and web; Flare and Sunburst are in the API. For dollar rates, see OpenAI image model pricing (opens in a new tab) (per-1M-token tables for Flare and Sunburst) — we are not reprinting a full rate card here.

GIF safety caveat. OpenAI's system card (opens in a new tab) flags motion-specific risks (e.g. harmful meaning across frames). On a targeted eval of 310 policy-violating GIFs, moderation using a caption + frame grid hit 77.66% recall — an eval-set figure, not a production rate. OpenAI itself says motion-related violations remain challenging and safeguards may miss some.

Honest caveats. The 50% faster, six-second Flare, and 4B/week numbers are vendor claims. MODEL has not tested Images 2.6, Flare, or Sunburst. GIF moderation recall is imperfect per OpenAI's own card.
